“My first car was my family’s ancient minivan and it didn’t have an aux cable so I listened to a lot of CD’s and I still do when I drive,” said Ilana Goldin as she navigates comfortably through the knee high stacks of records occupying the floor of WMHC’s radio broadcast room like an uneven three dimensional puzzle. The scene was a picture of disorganization, but not to Goldin who moves deftly through the stacks in the same lived in quality that one moves around their own living room. She knows exactly where everything is. Every shelved CD, every sticker…

Entropy: a universe forsaking balance and order. A realm of the disordered, the disjointed, the uncertain. For most, even an eventuality of fear. Fortunately for those who are able to read her work, Meryl Phair is not most. A true renaissance person who takes the chaos of the unknown and uncertain, and records it in the written word, making it accessible to all. This dramatic opening may seem like it requires extensive experience or extreme fortitude, but for Meryl, turning disorder to order is but one of three key steps in crafting the ultimate piece. “I like…

Cathy Zhang was nervous. Coming from Shanghai, China to attend early college at Bard College at Simons Rock, it was her first international study abroad experience. “All this writing and having classes in English has taken some time to get used to,” said Zhang. “I have so many grammar problems.” Despite what seemed like a mountainous challenge, Zhang’s exuberant energy and willingness to explore has led her to discover a warm family at Simon’s Rock, new hiking trails, a wide range of food, the benefits of democracy, an interest in poetry and now a fellowship for @GBLabs.

Going into tenth…

Georges Pichard became a high school chemistry teacher at the age of twenty one and realized it was not as simple as he initially thought. As a serial opportunist, when Riverdale Country School in New York offered him a position to take on three classes of general chemistry and one class of honors chemistry, Pichard (with little experience teaching at that point) couldn’t say no. “It was trial by fire,” he said.

Taking on this challenge, Pichard said that he learned more than he could have anticipated. He picked up skills day-by-day, and began to formulate an approach to teaching…

“It always starts with just one cup and then you’re in the deep end,” said Joe Grochmal as he placed his iced coffee down on the table of the newly launched @GBLabs office in Great Barrington Town Hall. “I am very much in the deep end.” Grochmal is a religious coffee drinker. He says it keeps his creative energy up. …

“It started when I brought up the issue of the lack of bus stop signs which seemed really bizarre to me,” said Tate Coleman. Considering the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BTRA) provides public transportation services to twenty six member communities within Berkshire County, a lack of adequate signage was bizarre. Coleman shared this observation with Great Barrington’s selectboard and they agreed it was bizarre. So did the BRTA. As a result of Coleman’s efforts, some twenty new signs went up around Berkshire County, but it didn’t stop there.

Shortly after the new bus stop sign installation, a proposal was submitted…

As the coronavirus pandemic has swept around the world, it has disrupted regular patterns of life and confined people within their homes. Like many college students, returning home unexpectedly in the midst of a busy semester was difficult as I grappled with the uncertainty of the coming months and the loss of a community into which I am so ingrained. Being quarantined in an apartment with my mom, younger sister, and a cat that enjoys chewing through my phone chargers, wasn’t exactly the summer I had planned.

Adjusting to new ways of living, working and regularly hand sanitizing has presented…
